Can Cosmetic Dentistry Help My Smile?

Nearly any smile can be enhanced with a custom cosmetic dental treatment. The right cosmetic treatment can alter the shape, size, color, and even alignment of your teeth.

During your consultation visit, Dr. Kiriluk discusses with you what you hope to achieve with your smile. He then examines your teeth to determine what treatments will be most effective for you, and works with you to create a custom treatment plan. With the plan in place, Dr. Kiriluk uses his experience and artistic flair to design a smile that is flattering to your features and reflects your personality.

What are the Different Types of Cosmetic Dentistry?

Our office provides five options for improving the appearance of your smile.

Teeth Whitening

If you feel like your smile isn’t as brilliant as it could be, you aren’t alone! It’s normal for teeth to become stained over time, especially if you frequently consume dark food and drinks like coffee, soda, or spaghetti sauce.

Fortunately, with professional teeth whitening, something can be done about it. Teeth whitening can lift even stubborn, set-in stains, restoring your teeth to their naturally beautiful shade.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

When you visit our office for teeth whitening, you receive custom whitening trays perfectly shaped to your teeth. These trays ensure that your whitening treatment will be evenly applied across your smile for the best possible results. We’ll also show you where your teeth rank on a color chart for comparison when your treatment is complete.

Once you’re comfortable in the dental chair, we apply a professional-strength whitening gel to your enamel. Protection is also provided along the gum line to minimize tooth sensitivity. The whitening gel works beneath the top layer of the enamel, lifting stains and revealing more of your natural tooth shade.

When the treatment is complete, we’ll show you where your new tooth shade is on the color chart. For some people, professional whitening can brighten their smile as much as seven shades whiter.

What Are the Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening?

When you come to a dental office to whiten your smile, you can expect multiple benefits.

  • Fast Treatment – A single session is typically completed in an hour from start to finish.
  • Effective – Dental professionals can use a higher-strength whitening gel than other methods, providing noticeable results.
  • Safe – With a dental professional monitoring your treatment, your results will be even, and they’ll help to minimize any sensitivity in your teeth.
  • Made to Last – Professional whitening lifts years of stains and keeps your teeth bright for a long time afterward. With proper care, you can ensure your teeth stay white and beautiful for years to come.

How Do I Keep My Teeth White?

Once your treatment is done, you’ll want to make sure your positive results last as long as possible. This means understanding what causes teeth to become yellow and what you need to do to avoid it.

Dark foods and drinks are the most common culprits of staining. To keep your teeth white, limit your consumption of things like coffee, soda, red wine, dark berries, and spaghetti sauce. Follow up these foods and drinks with a glass of water, and brush your teeth after a meal when you can.

Smoking and tobacco are also notorious for yellowing the teeth. For best results as well as good health, we strongly recommend that you avoid tobacco use entirely.

Composite Fillings

While our goal is to keep teeth healthy and whole for as long as possible, patients today don’t have to view fillings as punishment that ruins their smile’s aesthetic. With composite fillings, we can restore a tooth’s strength and function without sacrificing its beauty.

These conservative fillings are shade-matched to a tooth and become nearly invisible next to your natural enamel. They also bond well to enamel and can fit smaller spaces, preserving more of your original tooth.

Can I Have My Old Metal Filling Replaced with a Composite Filling?

Many people choose to replace metal dental work with a more aesthetic alternative. Dr. Kiriluk can examine your restoration to see what condition it’s in. So long as the rest of the tooth is healthy and the filling isn’t in an awkward place, it’s likely possible to trade out your old filling for a new one.

When it comes to enhancing your smile, few options are as popular or transformative as veneers. These thin porcelain shells are bonded to the front surface of your teeth, concealing everything from chipped teeth to gaps, severe stains, and even mildly crooked teeth.

Are Veneers Okay for Your Teeth?

Veneers don’t cause any harm to your teeth. When placed, veneers become the front surface layer of your tooth, becoming part of the tooth the same way a filling or crown does.

To place veneers, a small layer of the front enamel must be smoothed down and shaped. This keeps the tooth from looking bulky and makes the bond holding the veneer in place stronger. Once a veneer is bonded to the tooth, the tooth is protected and whole.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

On average, veneers last about ten years before needing to be replaced. With good care and hygiene practices, it may be possible to make them last even longer.

Brush your teeth twice daily, and be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid brushing too hard. Hard bristles and brushing can leave small scratches in your veneers, which can collect stains and bacteria.

Veneers are stain-resistant, but once discolored, they can’t be whitened. We strongly recommend that you whiten your teeth before veneer treatment to ensure a beautifully uniform smile.

Veneers, Crowns, or Braces: Which Do I Need?

If you have minor spacing or alignment issues, and you dislike the way they look, you may feel uncertain about what would be the best approach would be. Veneers, crowns, and clear braces can all be used to conceal or correct minor misalignments, so it all comes down to your unique situation and your personal preference.

Here’s what you should know about your three cosmetic options:

Veneers – These cover the surface of the tooth, concealing any gaps, chips, or visual cosmetic issues. They’re made to look lifelike and require little reshaping of the tooth, making them the simplest of the three options. However, they can’t withstand much chewing force and are typically recommended for the front six teeth on the top or bottom.

Crowns – Both cosmetic and restorative, crowns can be used to reshape a tooth completely. Porcelain crowns appear natural in the smile, making them virtually undetectable. They’re durable, protective, and can be used on any tooth. Before a crown is placed, the tooth must be carefully shaped to fit, removing much of the original tooth enamel.

Clear Braces – By far the most transformative option, this method works by actually moving the teeth into a new position, eliminating any gaps, crooked teeth, and other alignment issues. This comes with health benefits as well, creating a healthier bite, reducing uneven wear, and making it easier to brush and floss between teeth. It’s also the heaviest commitment, as orthodontic treatment typically takes 18 months or more depending on the issues involved.

When it comes to orthodontics, Invisalign provides a comfortable and discreet way to gain the straighter, healthier, and flattering smile you’ve always wanted. Using a series of custom-fit aligner trays, Invisalign gently guides teeth into their ideal alignment. Thanks to its removable nature, you can straighten your teeth without having to alter your brushing, eating, or lifestyle habits.

Top 5 Benefits of a Straighter Smile

Straighter smiles have multiple benefits, more than just cosmetic.

  1. Improves function – Improving how your teeth meet leads to better speaking, chewing, and less wear on teeth.
  2. Preserves oral health – Straighter teeth are easier to brush, floss, and whiten.
  3. Unhindered speech – Alignment issues are a common cause of speech impediments, such as lisps, but straighter teeth make speaking easier.
  4. Protects teeth from trauma – Teeth out of alignment are more likely to become chipped or broken in an accident.
  5. Improve smile aesthetics – Few would argue that a straighter smile signals good health and greater appeal.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?

If you have mild to moderate misalignment, you may benefit from Invisalign treatment. This option uses gentle pressure to shift teeth into the desired space. However, this option may not be right for individuals with teeth that need severe changes, or whose jaws are misaligned, both of which need more in-depth treatment.

Your gum health is also an important part of your overall health and alignment. If you have gum disease, the dentist may recommend caring for your gums before you begin orthodontic treatment.
